Our program is designed to provide young athletes with a competitive yet nurturing environment to develop their hockey abilities while fostering camaraderie and sportsmanship. Here's what you can expect from our program:

Team Formation and Season Schedule:

Each March or April, aspiring players attend tryouts, with team announcements made within 1 to 2 weeks. WYH typically fields 8-12 travel teams spanning various age groups including Mites, Squirts, Pee Wees, Bantams, Midgets, U10 Girls, U12 Girls, and U14 Girls. Our co-ed teams compete in the Valley League and our girls' teams compete in the MYCGL, with the season running from post-Labor Day until late March to mid-April. A typical week for a travel team player involves two weekday practices, a weekday skills session, and weekend games, held primarily at Larsen Rink. Games are scheduled primarily on weekends, with some weeknight fixtures for older players, played across various rinks on the north shore.

Travel Tournaments & Local Tournaments

Our teams actively participate in travel tournaments and local competitions throughout the season, providing players with opportunities for enhanced competition and skill showcase. While most teams at the Mite level and above partake in travel tournaments, individual teams also have the option to enter local tournaments. Tournament fees are separate from the annual tuition fee, with tournaments typically featuring round-robin play leading up to championship matches.

Games

Winthrop Youth Hockey players compete in league games, tournaments, and special events throughout the season, giving them valuable game experience and a chance to develop their skills in a competitive setting.

League Play

  • Coed Teams (Mites through Bantams) compete in the Valley Hockey League (VHL), one of the largest and most competitive youth hockey leagues in New England.
  • Girls Teams (U10 through U14) compete in the Massachusetts Youth Girls Hockey League (MYCGL), which provides a structured and competitive environment for female players.

Game Scheduling

  • Games are primarily played on weekends, though some games may be scheduled during school vacations and holidays.

Game Locations

  • Mite Games: Most games are played at Kasabuski Rink in Saugus, with some games taking place in Woburn and at Endicott College.
  • U10 through U14 Games: Games are played throughout the Greater Boston area, requiring travel to various rinks based on league scheduling.

Our program ensures that players have a well-rounded hockey experience, balancing skill development, competition, and fun.
